OK, I managed to update gcc4 on another G4 without problems; the
installation failure on my G4 laptop reported above still puzzles me,
especially since nothing else on that machine is malfunctioning.
Maybe I should have stopped bouncing that laptop around in my
backpack after they replaced the crashed hard disk a while ago...
