I'm glad that you got the compile to work - I'd had my own slew of problems.

Eventually I gave up and found the installation package and just installed
the binary. When I start it up, it brings up my Gnome session and appears to
run fine.

I'm not sure I understand what advantages there are to bringing it in with
fink rather than just using the pre-built installer. What am I missing?

Yes. Ditto for everyone involved in the OO development process. I finally
got my husband to look at it (a long-time Office hardcore) and he was truly
impressed by its capabilities.
