I'm glad that you got the compile to work - I'd had my own slew of problems.
Eventually I gave up and found the installation package and just installed the binary. When I start it up, it brings up my Gnome session and appears to run fine. I'm not sure I understand what advantages there are to bringing it in with fink rather than just using the pre-built installer.
