You needed a "sudo apt-get update". "fink selfupdate" is OK, too.

Not silly, just not yet finished. I quote from your log file:
Error: fink thinks that the package it is about to build:
fink (0.24.14-11)
is currently being built by another fink process. That build
process has a timestamp of:
2006.03.29-11.14.13
If this is not true (perhaps the previous build process crashed?),
just remove the fink package:
fink remove fink-buildlock-fink-0.24.14-11
Then retry whatever you did that led to the present error.
Just do what it says and remove the buildlock file.
