I think I've got a case-insensitive drive at home, so if that's the
case I'll try that one out and see what happens.

Followup: the build worked when my Fink build directory was on the
case-insensitive drive. I used the same computer with the Fink build
directory on a case-sensitive drive and I got the same style of
failure, but ending after a different .lproj file.
