It was.  Weird thing is, it works on my 10.3 machine, so there must be
something else involved as well.  You have anything like real-time virus
scanners or something else that does funky things with disk access?  I
seem to recall strange things like this could happen in such situations...

As for the other issue, erm, I forgot to look into it.  :)  Probably has
a different name/version in 10.3.
