As an alternative, consider Gerben Wierda's i-installer for tetex and  
related software.  I believe the TeX package includes xdvi.  I know I  
have a working xdvi without having fink-installed one. The i- 
installer is very convenient, and the TeX stuff is kept very up-to-date.
