If I recall correctly, gcc 3.1 _was_ the compiler for a while under jaguar, until an XCode update with gcc3.3 came about--this resulted in Fink having separate 10.2 and 10.2-gcc3.3 trees. In any case, for 10.4, Apple decided to segregate out gcc3.1 and 2.95, and you can install the XCode Legacy Compilers package to get 3.1, as the message above says. -- Alexander K.
