This really should be added onto Viv Kendon's thread "file index
warning: wrong number of days and won't go away", which I found in
the archive of the Fink-Users' List, but I couldn't see how to do it.
Here are a couple of minor points:

1. I got a similar message,

WARNING: your info file index has not been updated for 282 days.
You should run 'fink selfupdate' to get the latest package
descriptions.

immediately after a selfupdate resulted in the installation of fin,
0.27.0. Actually, the last selfupdate was about a week ago.

2. My machine uses Mac OS X 10.4.6 PPC.

3. After I followed this with my slightly doctored version of the
update-all command (to avoid updating quartz-wm) roughly 25 packages
were updated/installed. Installation of these packages was
unremarkable, as nearly as I can tell. After that, another
self-update command produced the same warning; after that, my
modified update-all command resulted in no updates. So it appears
that the only problem is with the warning message itself; the actual
registering of the new/updated packages seems to be working well,
