I decided to take check my hardware and software out after Jack Howarth's comment that he had had similar error messages when he had a bad block on his hard disk. I did not find any bad blocks, so I used diskutil and disk utility to repair the disk. There did not seem to be any major errors from this although they found the usual minor bad bit changes, etc. I then used DiskWarrior to fix the directory. After this software massage, I ran gcc4.2, and the program built fine! I am wondering if the directory was broken enough that the program could not use temporary space properly? Oh, I checked and I have 8 MB of stack size. Thank you Martin and Jack for your suggestions, I really appreciated your help.
