After having had several months of this well-known situation, the 
natural question is: Why do we still dump all this broken cruft (binary 
installer, full tarball for bootstrapping, not to mention the 
still-accessible 10.4-transitional tree) on non-suspecting beginners? Is 
there really nobody left any more who has the time for a bit of mucking out?
