Ah.  I should have looked. :-)

It must be an issue specific to running my clean build environment 
(external system drive) in a chroot rather than booted as the system 
drive.  This setup works most of the time, but occasionally things don't 
work quite right. 

I tried removing breqn and installing the new cadabra on my normal Fink 
setup, and the breqn postinstall and cadabra build functioned normally, .
