That was correct--I didn't have the X11SDK.pkg installed.
After I installed it "fink self-udpate" was confused about inconsistent
dependencies, so I started the whole process over from scratch. This time
everything went through without a hitch. Thanks for your help.

indicates that X11SDK isn't installed, or that a critical file got
