In any case what you're seeing with xfree86 isn't the real error--that occurred earlier on in the build, but the operation continues rather than stopping. Cf. http://www.finkproject.org/faq/comp-general.php#mv-failed You might check earlier on in your build and see if you can find the error message--the missing /etc may be a red herring, though, if /etc happens to be generated in the same section of the build as the error.
