"Any package"?  Is it only that xfree86 is failing, or do you get 
different failures in other, non-X11, packages?

In any case what you're seeing with xfree86 isn't the real error--that 
occurred earlier on in the build, but the operation continues rather 
than stopping.  Cf.

You might check earlier on in your build and see if you can find the 
error message--the missing /etc may be a red herring, though, if /etc 
happens to be generated in the same section of the build as the error.  
Or try xorg.
