Vim automatically does X things on startup, even when running in a terminal, iif it was compiled with X support and $DISPLAY is set (very annoying if you have it set but X isn't actually running).. The easiest solution for CLI vim is to alias it to "vim -X" in your shell setup, but you can also install a version that doesn't know from X.
