That is correct -- the same error pops up in Wireshark. With
Wireshark a workaround is to set X11.app (in its preference settings)
to 16 bit color ("thousands").

I've seen reports of this same error reported for wireshark, for which
it appears it's due to a bug in cairo or one of the other graphics
