There is something wrong with your 'ld' executable. It behaves like an
old one from before Leopard. Try to find out what it is, with commands like
what /usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld
file /usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld
ls -lL /usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld
which for me give
/usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld
PROGRAM:ld PROJECT:ld64-77
/usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld: Mach-O universal binary
with 2 architectures
/usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld (for architecture i386):
Mach-O executable i386
/usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld (for architecture
ppc7400): Mach-O executable ppc
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2098528 Sep 24 00:40
/usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin9/4.0.1/ld
What do you get?
