Ah, was a bit distracted there.  :-) 

The icon disappearance scenario is more complicated.  Removing wine 
appears not to have been the direct culprit, unless there's a removal 
command in its postremove phase that's more aggressive than is warranted 
and it thereby clobbered your icons. 

I don't recall which package is supposed to provide the icons--possibly 
it's gnome-desktop.  It may be as simple as just reinstalling that.
