Many thanks for the suggestion...this doesn't work in my
case...I tried lots of permutations of .mozilla dirs new and
old from my existing working machines:

mv .mozilla .mozilla-v2
pippin:/import/qihome/users/viv-10> firefox
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
/sw/lib/firefox2/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 82548 Bus error
"$prog" ${1+"$@"}

It gets as far as creating this much of a new .mozilla:

  ls .mozilla/firefox/yqthmytz.default/
total 1925
    1 ./ 1 compatibility.ini 1
localstore.rdf
    1 ../ 134 compreg.dat 1 lock@
    0 .parentlock 1 extensions/ 1
mimeTypes.rdf
1668 XPC.mfasl 1 extensions.cache 1 prefs.js
    8 bookmarks.html 1 extensions.ini 4 search.rdf
    1 chrome/ 4 extensions.rdf 103 xpti.dat

before it crashes.

My home dir is on a networked (nfs, linux) volume btw, in
case that's any part of the problem (don't really see how,
but...)

many thanks,
