Yup. I'm seeing messages equivalent to those in the output
immediately before the text I quoted. (Oops, thanks for reading the
mind of the output...)
I do have fink's SED installed:
i sed 4.1.5-11 The stream editor, GNU version
Any suggestions? Should I uninstall sed and use apple's default or
something?

It won't help. You'll get things like:
config.status: creating Makefile
sed: 32: ./confstat8lCDB7/subs-1.sed: unescaped newline inside
substitute pattern
instead. I could have sworn that this built on 10.5 at one point.
I'll dig around.
