You didn't provide your operating system version.
If you're on 10.4 and using Apple's X11 this is due to the known issue
that Apple's X11 doesn't process any user Unix startup scripts other
than .bashrc .
A workaround is to do the following:
1) create a file called .bashrc in your home directory, e.g. via
"pico ~/.bashrc", and put the following in it:
. /sw/bin/init.sh
Then save that file.
2) Edit your ~/.profile (or ~/.bash_profile) by running "pico
~/.profile". It should have a line like what I just told you to put
in ~/.bashrc ; replace that with the following:
. ~/.bashrc
then save.
