OS 10.5 Intel, Xcode 3.1.1, X11 2.3.1, current updates on unstable tree

Problem: Attempting to launch gnome-session fails with the following  
message-
> Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are  
> that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have  
> stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See 
> http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ 
>  for information. (Details -  1: Failed to get connection to  
> session: dbus-launch failed to autolaunch D-Bus session: Autolaunch  
> requested, but X11 support not compiled in.
> Cannot continue.

I have gone to the gnome.org website but haven't a clue as to what to  
do.

I do not have an .xinitrc file and I have deleted my ~/.gnome* and  
~/.gconf* files. If I attempt to run gconf-editor I get a blank edit  
box with the can't connect message.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
