fink -l build <packagenames> generates build log files in /tmp

It's not directly related, since you'd still be using the prior  
version of pth2* until a new one is actually installed after a  
successful build.

The combination of the two errors sounds to me like something is awry  
with how your system is allocating PTYs.  Try logging a build of pth2  
so that we can see the message.
