I doubt it's looping. It's a big build, and the length to compile depends on your OS and architecture: for example, it typically took 3 days on my G4 under 10.4 . 10.5 is a bit better.
If you want to check whether it's looping, you're pretty much left with looking at the echoed compiler input lines in the terminal.
