I tried your suggestion. Now I get a new error stating that
"system-java14-dev-1.4.2-1" is missing and suggesting downloading the Java
1.4.2 SDK from the Apple website. I can't find it on the Apple website. Any
suggestions?

You didn't specify your Xcode version. It looks like you've got
3.1.2, from which the .la files were removed. You'll either want to
downgrade to 3.1.1 or install the Xquartz update from macosforge.org.
