Sabine,
Why don't you try moving your /sw aside as /sw.sav and install the
latest fink binary release. Configure fink to use the unstable branch
and execute...
fink selfupdate-cvs
fink update-all
fink install openmotif3
Also make sure you have the latest Xcode installed for your OS release.

ps No one else has reported a problem like this so I suspect the
issue is specific to your fink installation.
