Please forgive me if this is an old topic that has been
beaten to death and I just wasn't around for it, but I've
not been able to find any mention of it in the Archives
(even with the help of the gmane search engine).

In any listserver environment, there are times when one
would like to see only postings that are relevant to one
or two specific topics, and NOT see all the others. The
Mailman configuration tool at

  https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/options/fink-users

provides a method for this:
________________________________________________________

Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?
______________________________________________________________________

By selecting one or more topics, you can filter the traffic on the
mailing list, so as to receive only a subset of the messages. If a
message matches one of your selected topics, then you will get the
message, otherwise you will not.

If a message does not match any topic, the delivery rule depends on the
setting of the option below. If you do not select any topics of
interest, you will get all the messages sent to the mailing list.
______________________________________________________________________

*No topics defined* [emphasis added]

Talk about dashed hopes....

Now, I can imagine reasons why no topics have been defined:
(a) There are too many topics.
(b) There might be disagreement about how to title them.
(c) Someone would have to manage this, a big job.

The same arguments must have applied to predecessors of Google.

Argument (a) is inescapable; in fact it is _desirable_.
For (b) I would suggest that the "topic" be the package name
[without Version details, I'd say] but the manager [if any]
could decide this. For (c) the best solution would be to
persuade Mailman developers to implement a Google-style
filter that each member of the list can tweak the same way
as an Email filter. Of course I can do this myself on my
local mail client, but it is frustrating to see that offer
on the Mailman configurator and then have it jerked away
for lack of a Topic list. :-(

Is there any hope for improvement of this situation, or do
I have to set up my own filters?

Thanks -- Jess
