I have installed LyX, the word processor, on OS X 10.4.11. I have
spent only a couple of hours with it, but there seem to be some
oddities.

First of all, when pasting text which has been copied from within
LyX, or when opening a LyX Help file, this message appears in a
dialog box:

The layout file requested by this document,
   article.layout,
is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX
class or style file required by it is not
   available. See the Customization documentation
   for more information.
LyX will not be able to produce output.

I have seen other versions of the message where article.layout is
something else. After I dismiss the dialog, the pasted text appears
as expected. When pasting text that has been put into the clipboard
from a "normal" Mac program such as Text Edit, the dialog box does
not appear.

Also, clicking on the Adobe logo in the tool bar results in a dialog
box that says this:

No information for exporting the format PDF (pdflatex).

Clicking on DVI and PS have similar results. (Note that the Tutorial
says that there should be a View>DVI menu item but there is none.)

Finally (for now), images are not rendered. For example, in the
User's Guide, instead of seeing a platypus in Section 4.6.1, I see a
box with this text in it:

   platypus.eps
   Error converting to loadable format

Thanks for any help,
Jerry
