That latter doesn't seem confusing at all...it's just a restatement of
what you noted previously: the gs version dependency isn't reflected
in the evinec package. We probably forgot we've had ghostscript < 8 at
all (8 was added years ago)...fixed in evince-2.20.2-7

Wish we could update evince to its more modern version (2.24.x), but
it needs an even newer ghostscript, which doesn't yet build correctly
on OS X from what I've seen:(
