Thank you for this. So it turns out that it seems to be my X11 qt3 fonts 
in general as I have the same problem when using qtconfig, even after 
rebuilding qt3, scrapping ~/.qt, and reinstalling qt3. Installing 
another X11 app, xephem, does not have this problem. Besides searching 
for this in the archives (which I admit that I haven't done yet), is 
there another obvious approach to tracking down my issues? I'm using 
http://static.macosforge.org/xquartz/downloads/X11-2.4.0_beta4.dmg 
(without the sparkle upgrade) if it matters.
Thanks again for saving me a lot of heartache trying to fix something 
that wasn't broken,
