Ok! Its the shell that changed. I was using bash under 10.5 (which explains why altpdftex worked for it) and have modified the default for 10.6, but apparently the TeXShop installed via Fink on 10.6 still uses sh. When I install TeXShop from the web, it works as expected. Thanks for the explanation. I'll modify the altpdf* scripts to use the bash shell.
