...not sure exactly why this is a problem.

Installing the latest unstable version of calc, 2.12.4.0 (the fink version
is 2.11.5.8), works like a charm.  Compiles with no errors. 2.12.3.3 (latest
unstable) is similarly trivial--no configure step necessary, just an edit of
the makefile to specify --prefix=/sw.

So it is likely that a straight-up upgrade of the package will fix this.
