Peter, From the last message on this webpage... http://www.pubbs.net/200909/gcc/74135-cvssvn-binutils-and-gcc-on-macos-x.html it appears that mach-o support in binutils is rather uneven. I strongly believe that binutils should be buried in %p/lib/binutils/bin and %p/lib/binutils/lib otherwise we are in for an endless cycle of tracking down which configure accidentally went for binutils instead of cctools. Even if binutils ever became rock-solid, it is unclear to me why we would want to silently default over to it instead of cctools.
