On my 10.5 system $HOME/.gconf/ is also writable by the group:

$ ls -ld ~/.gconf
drwx-w---- 4 hansen staff 136 2010-07-22 10:36 /Users/hansen/.gconf

I'm not sure whether that matters or not.  I don't have my 10.6 drive
handy right now to check whether the permissions are the same there.
