The (now corrected) line from the revision that Dominique was having
problems with had the following:

if [ `which kpsexpand` ]; then %p/bin/kpsexpand
%p/etc/texmf.local/latex/gnuplot; fi

i.e. I didn't change over completely from enforcing a fink TeX to an
arbitrary one.  Presumably there was a non-Fink kpsexpand in the PATH,
causing the error.

As for why kpsexpand is getting run in the first place:  it was that way
when I took the package over, and I didn't change that.
