        I don't have an answer for you, but a clarification: you are not having 
a problem with debconf, you are having a problem with dialog.  The maintainer 
of dialog may not notice since he likely isn't looking for problems with other 
packages, so i've cc'ed him.  I see you've included your version of OSX, but it 
might be useful to also mention what version of fink you are using.
