Putting on my magic glasses, I see some important info you didn't 
mention: you are probably using the "stable" package collection.  A 
related/similar-sounding bug was fixed recently in unstable and is 
expected to migrate to stable later this week (as part of a huge update 
that will give KDE-3.5.10).
