I updated the operating system from 10.5.8 to 10.6.4
I installed Xcode 3.2.4 and the system tools.
Then, I updated my 10.5.8 fink (32-bit) to snow leopard 10.6.4 following the
instructions posted
on the fink website news.
Finally, I also installed XQuartz-2.5.3 for snow leopard and logged out
and in again as suggested in the website.
I try to execute gnuplot-4.4.0-3 and I get
$ gnuplot

I was not able to rebuild gnuplot-4.4.0-3. Compilation fails:
