This shouldn't be needed, and this can cause build problems in other
packages which expect features that exist in Apple's gcc but not in
Fink's. In general, our packages expect to use Xcode's compilers, and
only use Fink's when deliberately set up to do so.

I'm assuming you're on 10.4/Intel. What Xcode version are you using?
("fink list xcode" will provide that).
Also, how about providing the output of
type -a gcc
