I see the same behavior on 10.6/i386 and 10.6/x86_64--but not
10.5/powerpc.  In the crash log, I noticed

Application Specific Information:
abort() called
USING_FORK_WITHOUT_EXEC_IS_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_FILE_MANAGER

Anything that uses CoreFoundation isn't supposed just to fork, and the
vim GUI does indeed use CoreFoundation, via gtk+2.
This is something that the maintainer will need to look at.
