A hint for everyone who gets these errors:

1. Make sure you have your Snow Leopard installation DVD
2. Uninstall Xquartz as in
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X11-UsersFAQ#UninstallSnowLeopard
3. Uninstall X11 and X11SDK as in
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X11-UsersFAQ#MesseditupgotconfusedwanttostartoverLeopard
4. Open Optional Installs, and install X11
5. Open Optional Installs/Packages (you might need Terminal for this, as Finder
hides it) and install X11SDK.pkg

You should now be back at a working X11 installation. At least it worked for
me. :)

One weird thing: at the end of the Optional Install, the installer told me "you
should install the Combo Update to 10.6.7, even if 10.6.7 is already installed"
- but the Combo Update didn't allow me to install because 10.6.7 was already
installed. Oh well, let's just hope it'll all work either way. Wine seems to
work pretty well, now... :)
