AND, in the above you have:

XFT_LIBS='-L/sw64/lib -L/usr/X11/lib -lXft -lXrender -lfontconfig
- -lfreetype -lX11'

While in the message you quoted I had:

XFT_LIBS='-L/sw64/lib -lXft -lfontconfig -lfreetype'

which is a substantial difference, and would account for the build
using stuff in /usr/X11 rather than in /sw64
