Not to threadjack but just for greater understanding on how to deal with 
similar issues, should they present themselves. How do you solve any X11 issue 
on 10.7 Lion, given that there is no install media per se in most 
installations. be they OTW upgrades or factory default installs? In contrast 
with the OP, who presumably will be able to locate all necessary X11 stuff in 
his 10.6 DVDs.

When I fired up the new MBP two weeks ago, it came with X11 preinstalled 
(XQuartz 2.6.3, xorg-server 1.10.3, as per its About… box), but I have no clue 
as to what support files and libraries might be in there. Downloaded and 
installed Xcode 4.2.1 as-is from the App Store, since I found no knobs or 
twiddles to fiddle with and choose what I wanted to put in.
