Have you set the environment variable DISPLAY somewhere? Then unset it, comment 
it, make it never be set!

This is a rather old X server built by the Macports folks. On their web site, 
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki, you can find a more up-to-date 
version. It has solved a few things, it even can update itself. (I think your 
old version never did launch for me. XQuartz and X clients from Fink do 
collaborate well.)

Check also with launchctl which services are active. You might need to unload 
some com.apple items, or when you launch an X client in Finder it starts a new 
X server...
