Thanks for the suggestions, I will follow them in future...
now I am trying to build mplayer and it keeps on assuming that I am using 64 
bit, but my O/S is 32 bit MAC OS X 10.6.8 on Intel core solo... so it fails 
with message: 

lto-llvm.s:954944:FATAL:Symbol .L_bye already defined.
