Is it possible that the new make simply detects errors in Makefiles that
/usr/bin/make or earlier Fink makes silently ignored? Here is another
example I just came across:

I get a build failure for wxgtk2.8-2.8.12-3 (10.6/x86_64) with Fink's
make installed that does not happen when Fink's make is removed:

[...]
config.status: creating contrib/utils/Makefile
config.status: creating lib/wx/include/gtk2-unicode-release-2.8/wx/setup.h
config.status: executing wx-config commands

Configured wxWidgets 2.8.12 for `x86_64-apple-darwin10'

   Which GUI toolkit should wxWidgets use? GTK+ 2 with
support for gnomeprint gnomevfs
   Should wxWidgets be compiled into single library? no
   Should wxWidgets be compiled in debug mode? no
   Should wxWidgets be linked as a shared library? yes
   Should wxWidgets be compiled in Unicode mode? yes
   What level of wxWidgets compatibility should be enabled?
                                        wxWidgets 2.4      no
                                        wxWidgets 2.6      yes
   Which libraries should wxWidgets use?
                                        jpeg               sys
                                        png                sys
                                        regex              builtin
                                        tiff               sys
                                        zlib               sys
                                        odbc               no
                                        expat              sys
                                        libmspack          no
                                        sdl                yes

   make
Makefile:10473: *** missing separator.  Stop.
### execution of /tmp/fink.9qhan failed, exit code 2
[...]

The offending lines in build/Makefile do indeed look suspect, like not
quite processed:

@USE_PLUGINS_0@__PLUGIN_ADV_SRC_OBJECTS_3 \
@USE_PLUGINS_0@ = advlib_sound_sdl.o

My guess is that this comes from a bug in Makefile.in, introduced by the
wxgtk2.8 patch file. Anyway, removing Fink's make let the build succeed.
