If you selected the text from the web page and copied and pasted it into an editor that can indeed introduce newlines and other control characters. I usually save .info and .patch files using the browser's File->Save command. Other than having to make sure that the .info file doesn't get renamed to an ".info.txt" file, which Fink doesn't recognize, I haven't had many problems with that approach.
