That would work, too.  The problems with /usr/local are:

1) It seems to be impossible to hide from the build tools.
2) It's the default install location for hand-built packages.
3) It's also the default install location for third-party packagers.

If, like in your case, something goes haywire from a third-party or a
local install, then it can spill over everywhere.

Admittedly, on 10.6 and earlier, Fink isn't as good about avoiding
third-party compilers in the PATH as it is is on 10.7 and later--that
might have prevented libgomp from getting dragged in.
