1)  The package that failed was "guile18-gtk", so I've changed the
subject to specify that.

2)  You didn't specify your platform, but I don't reproduce your issue
on a 10.5 machine.

The output message's suggestion of looking in config.log is a good idea
here.  That would be:

/sw/src/fink.build/guile18-gtk-2.1-3/guile-gtk-2.1/config.log

assuming a default Fink setup.  Look in that file for "checking for C
compiler default output file name..." and right after that there should
be a test compile script and the resulting error message.
