I'm seeing what I believe is the same thing, as I reported earlier.  I
found that trying to use "gnome-session" at startup doesn't work.  On
10.5 there were messages about linking to CoreFoundation and forking,
which is a fatal error.  There aren't any messages on 10.6, but my guess
is that the problem is the same, since the build is pretty similar.
gnome-session itself doesn't link to CoreFoundation, so I'm not sure
exactly where the complaint arises from.

I _was_ able to start X11 with the following user file, however:

. /sw/bin/init.sh
metacity &
exec gnome-panel
