Indeed! X11 has, presumingly, set only a rudimentary PATH setting. It is 
different from what other "native" Mac OS X applications inherit. It's useful 
to set in ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xinitrc.d/50-clients.sh, which launches the 
"desktop" and its applications (the window manager comes in a "later" script, 
~/.xinitrc.d/96-fluxbox.sh or whatever), so that the interactive applications 
can inherit a useful PATH setting.
